Alexander Shchetynsky

Antiphons
for cello and piano
(1983)

The work represents a sort of musical meditation with some features of minimalism. Thematisism includes elements of Gregorian chorale and znamenny chant of the Orthodox Church, as well as ancient scales. However, there are no real quotations.

I did not provide the piece with any literary program, but an interchange of expressionistic recitations and prayerful calmness may be associated with biblical stories. A combination of Catholic and Orthodox musical elements bring to the work some ecumenical background.
