Alexander Shchetynsky

Sonata
for cello and piano
(2006)

The piece is one movement composition built in free sonata form. It contains a good number of stylistic allusions to several historical styles – from late Romanticism to Impressionism and quasi-serial atonality. All the styles are presented fragmentary and freely follow each other. Due to smooth and almost imperceptible transitions between different styles, the music avoids mere eclecticism and incorporates all stylistic elements into a new meta-style.

Originally Sonata was written as music to the central episode of the Ihor Podolchak's art house film Las Meninas (2009). The sound track of this 15 minute episode, that shows chimerical sexual fantasies of one of the main characters, contains no speech but only music.
